Alain's books are never, for me, gripping reads. I often take longer to read through one of his books than through those of any other author I know. However, what I like about his books is the way he makes life and the circumstances we encounter along the way seem so poetic. He has a way with words few other authors have managed. He's not perfect, but he's absolutely one of my favorite, living, authors. Thank you for reviewing his newest. I haven't read it yet but may take it with me on this next trip.

Really enjoyed the photos of the natural carpet of Jacaranda and Bougainvillea flowers- two south american native treasures.

We had some large Jacaranda trees lining a street in my neighborhood in Hawai'i and it was always magic when the flowers began to fall.

Thanks Rob!

Thanks, Pam! I think the "if it looks like HDR, it should be avoided" idea is a great rule of thumb. I wanna stay away from the bar-poster look, ya know?

Typically, I hate HDR. I think it looks like a bar clock. You know, some shiny backlit image with a clock in it and a beer brand. Probably a waterfall. Maybe with an elk displaying a splendid rack in front of said waterfall.

This, though, is FINE. In this case, all you've got is better lighting in the shadows. It doesn't LOOK like HDR.

My rule (in my empire) is if it looks like HDR, it should be avoided. Pictures should be about what's in them, not about the process you used to make them.

So there.

It was equally enjoyable meeting you today, as it was reading through and looking at your works here- the internet- where you can type micronesia into the boston globe archives and up pops your article as the second most relevant in 5 years time. Really lovely writing- thank you!

Did you get to eat any interesting food in Colombia?

btw: Have you checked out my blog? I would love to get some feedback from you. I really admire your blog and your work. Maybe one day I can also make money writing about travel and food. :)
